Built because the problem was real.
Punchless came from watching field service businesses lose hours every week to a problem that sounded simple: getting accurate timecards from crews that work across dozens of job sites.
The pattern was the same at every company: field technicians work hard all day, then get asked at 4 PM to remember what time they arrived at the second job. They guess. The manager edits the guess. Payroll runs on edited guesses.
Nobody meant for it to be this way. The problem is structural - manual time entry requires people to stop work to record work, and it always loses to the job in front of them.
GPS solves this, but most GPS tools were either too complex (fleet telematics built for logistics), too invasive (continuous tracking that technicians rightfully push back on), or too manual (everyone still had to remember to log in).
Punchless was designed from the technician's perspective first. Geofence-triggered events, not continuous tracking. A background app that doesn't interrupt the workday. Draft timecards that managers review, not records that auto-approve without human sign-off. GPS as a tool that helps both sides of the payroll conversation.

Merrill Digital Systems is a software development firm that builds custom operational tools for businesses that have outgrown generic SaaS. Punchless is MDS's first SaaS product - built internally, then productized because the problem kept coming up with clients.
